Some songs in the forthcoming album Into the Mountain might seem a little long. But, sometimes when we are a little older, it takes longer to tell a story. Perhaps we have more to share. Enjoy the Journey into the Mountain. This will be a double-disc album.

Mountain Castle Music is based in Los Angeles, California led by Mikio Sankey. The musicians are an eclectic blend of professional creative artists.  This is a musical journey into what I call a Mountain Story. I don’t know what to call the music other than Mountain Castle Music. All the music consists of original compositions. The songs are a blend of rock, rhythm & blues, a tinge of Latin, sounds of Asia, country, jazz, folk and Americana. Mountain Castle Music does not fit into any one genre.

I wanted to allow a blend of singing with various styles of instrumental solos within the songs. I also wanted to make sure the music sounded a bit like a live recording and not so sterile and clean. You will notice in some songs such as: When the Leaves Turn Green and A Sunny Street, there are three different soloists with their own creative input into the song. Keeps Smiling was also going to have three different soloist. I was initially planning to play a Gibson Les Paul lead in the first section with two different soloists to follow. In the initial overdubs on the solos, Edwing was not sure of the arrangement of the song. So I told Edwing to play lead on all three sections to find a groove. Edwing played such a beautiful screaming Telecaster lead solo on the three sections that I decided to keep his guitar as is. Jean Sudbury’s violin was incorporated in the second solo section. Later Edwing told me to play guitar on the first section, but I loved his input on the Telecaster so much that we left his three guitar parts in the song.

A Sunny Street ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

In this placed called planet Earth

We are all just doing time

How you choose to live your life

How do you choose to use the time?

I choose to walk on a sunny street

Where laughter, love and the sunshine meet

I choose to walk on a sunny street

The road is smoother and life is sweet

It’s up to you

The decisions that you make

The power is within your heart,

Which road will you take?

Sometimes when you’re down and out

You don’t know just what to do

You feel that you’re at the crossroads of life

Not many choices for you it seems

But I choose to walk on a sunny street

Where laughter, love and the sunshine meet

I choose to walk on a sunny street

The road is smoother and life is sweet

It’s up to you

The decisions that you make

The power is within your heart,

Which road will you take?

Edwing used an early 1950’s American Fender Telecaster (reissue) through a ’57 Fender Tweed Champ amp (reissue) cranked up with no foot pedals.

Mikio used an ’83 Gibson Les Paul Custom through a 60 watt Fender Super Sonic amp on the Bassman channel (volume set below 1), and simultaneously used a   ’65 Fender Deluxe Reverb (reissue) amp by going through a Radial Big Shot ABY foot pedal. Mikio also used a Boss Super Shifter PS5 pedal (set very low) through the Super Sonic amp. The guitar sound he wanted was a blend of the contrasting broader sound of the Bassman with the cleaner ringing sound of the Deluxe and this specific ’83 Les Paul. (Those of you who have Gibson Les Paul’s know that each guitar sound is different.)

Flight of the Seagull ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

Fly away, just trying to see

Fly away, trying to break free

Feeling the healing warmth of the sun

I fly way or should I say run

Soaring high above the seas

Fly away, fly away with me

Fly away into the clouds

Embracing what we have found

Together just you and me

True love will last for eternity

Fly away, I know in my heart

We can fly away and stay up in the clouds

Sometimes floating weightless through space

My mind seems to be in a perpetual race

Lost in a world

I don’t understand

I tough it out, do the best that I can

I take the flight of the seagull

The seagull glides along with the air

The seagull has no worries and no cares

I try my best to fly just like him

Fly away into the wind

Fly away into the mist

Our love intact, sealed with an eternal kiss

Fly away, soar above the ground

Others searching for what we have found

My heart sings out so very loud

But we just fly above the clouds

Fly away, fly away with me

Fly away, just you and me

Together, just you and me

But only if we both can see

Fly away, our way to be free

We tough it out, do the best that we can

We take the flight of the seagull

Mikio — Guitar Solo

Ever felt you’re in a world in between

Things all around you, but they can’t be seen

Look up, nothing but the skies so blue

Look down, see nothing but deep oceans blue

In these times my head seems to swirl

It feels like I’m in between worlds

Fly away, fly away with me

Fly away, trying to be free

Fly away, soar above the sun

Fly with me, we can be as one

Come on fly, fly, fly away, fly away with me

Fly, fly, fly away we can be so free

We can fly, fly, fly away, fly away with me

Fly away

Fly away

Fly away

For rhythm guitar, Mikio used an ESP LTD Thinline TL6Z acoustic/electric guitar through a 1965  Blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb (reissue) amp.

For the guitar solo, Mikio used an ’83 Gibson Les Paul Custom through a 60 watt Fender Super Sonic amp on the Bassman channel (volume set below 1), and simultaneously used a   ’65 Fender Deluxe Reverb (reissue) amp by going through a Radial Big Shot ABY amp switcher. Mikio also used a Boss Super Shifter PS5 pedal (set very low) through the Super Sonic amp.

Couldn’t See the Truth ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

I couldn’t see the truth

My mind got in the way

I couldn’t see the truth

My pride got in the way

I always tried to be strong inside

But that was just to mask my inner pride

Those inner tears that I could not hide

So I just forged a smile

In the deepest places of my inner sea

Pretending to be someone I could not be

I used to put it off to being young

Now father time is catching up

But all the while

I couldn’t see the truth

My mind got in the way

I couldn’t see the truth

My pride got in the way

Open up your mind

Be truthful to yourself

Open up your heart

Be true to yourself

Edwing — Butterfly Harp Solo

Jean Sudbury — Violin/Viola Solo

I couldn’t see the truth

My mind got in the way

I couldn’t see the truth

My pride got in the way

I tried to shed the heaviness in me

For just one moment, so I could feel free

But my fears clouded my vision to see

My inner joy was not meant to be

In the deepest places of my inner sea

Pretending to be someone I could not be

I used to put it off to being young

Now father time is catching up

But all the while

I couldn’t see the truth

My mind got in the way

I couldn’t see the truth

My pride got in the way

Open up your mind

Be truthful to yourself

Open up your heart

Be true to yourself

I couldn’t see the truth

My mind got in the way

I couldn’t see the truth

I couldn’t see the truth

I used to put it off to being young

Now father time is catching up

For rhythm guitar and the guitar solo at the end, Mikio used an ESP LTD Thinline TL6Z acoustic/electric guitar with a 22 watt Fender Super Sonic head through a Fender cabinet with one 12 inch Celestion Vintage 30 speaker.

Keep Smiling ©

Lyrics by Ynez Anthony; Music by Mikio

Keep smiling, keep on smiling

Shine your light around the world

Keep smiling, keep on smiling

Shine your light around the world

Just to know you can light up the world

All you gotta do is open your heart

Open up, open up your heart

All you gotta do is open your heart

When it starts the world to glowing

Fireflies turn on their light

Everything just comes alive

Everyone gets in the vibe and

Everyone can shine……..

Let it shine, let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine

And the power of your light

Can awaken everyone waiting for

The chance to feel your love

Gotta keep on glowing

So the moon and the stars will know

You’re not alone, you’re not alone

And heaven isn’t only in the sky

Cause you can flow and you can roll with

Cause your Dharma is filled with light

And you can do whatever it takes

So come on now and play

Let it shine, let it shine

Let it shine, oh yeah

Let it shine, let it shine

Snowflake Thoughts ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

When the last snow melts

And the streams start to flow

This is the time

I remember the glow

Your glistening smile and

The bounce in your heart

I remember oh so well

Those winter walks

And the love that we shared

On those cold winter sunsets

We spent together

Mystical shapes floating

Out with each breath

Just before

Before a kiss

And I remember oh so well

Those winter walks

And the love that we shared

When finally the last snowfall

Starts to melt

Cool mist kisses

The brisk, clear, fresh air

Wintertime giving way

Soon spring will be here

You’re the one who was

Here for me

When I needed you

But something’s changed

Mikio — Guitar Solo

On those cold winter walks

We felt free for a moment

No need to speak

Your eyes told the story

Snowflakes fell on your head

Capturing your thoughts

I remember oh so well

Those winter walks

And the love that we shared

When the snowflakes are falling

I remember your eyes

When snowflakes are falling

I remember your smile

Those winter walks

We were hand-in-hand

Those winter walks

Life then was so grand

When the snowflakes are falling

I remember your eyes

When snowflakes are falling

I remember your smile

Your gentle voice

All those things that I miss

Your gaze, your tenderness

I remember your kiss

I remember your kiss

Those sweet times together

I remember those days

But like the passage of time

Snowflakes melt and flow away

Fragrance of Compassion

You left in the air

I remember so well

Those snowflake thoughts

I keep close in my heart

I still have those

Snowflake Thoughts

I still keep those

Snowflake Thoughts

Deep in my heart

I keep those Snowflake Thoughts

Deep in my heart

I keep those Snowflake Thoughts

And I remember your kiss

I remember your kiss

I remember your kiss

I remember your kiss

Leaves Turn Green ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home to you

I’ve had my say and done things my own way

Now it’s time to turn a new leaf

Change my old ways of doing things

Clean up my life and dry my inner tears

It is said to be the way of Nature’s flow

That everything will change

Sometimes I feel my life has come and gone

Giving way to younger hearts and minds

But for now excitement is in the air

I’ve got so many places to see

Some say you must travel the seven seas

To clear your mind and set yourself free

There are some things left that I must do

To find out just who I am

I Must go inward to that quiet place

Somewhere deep within

Until that time

When I’m coming back

Coming back home to you

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home to you

I’ve had my say and done things my way

Now it’s time to turn a new leaf

The yearning in my heart is no longer overflowing

With the passage of time gone by

Mikio — Guitar Solo

Cal Bezemer — Piano Solo

Edwing — Guitar Solo

But for now excitement is in the air

I’ve got so many places to see

Some say you must travel the seven seas

To clear your mind and set yourself free

Everything starts with the way you feel

Then you begin to control your own life

My roving days have left me now

Soon I’ll be coming back home to you

I’m trying to catch on to the rhythm of life

Doing all the things I can then some

One day I’ll be coming back home to you

And that day is coming soon

But for now excitement is in the air

I’ve got so many places to see

Some say you must travel the seven seas

To clear your mind and set yourself free

There are some things left that I must do

To find out just who I am

I must go inward to that quiet place

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home

When the leaves turn green I’ll be coming home to you

I’ll be coming back home, coming back home to you

I’ll be coming back home, coming back home to you

Edwing — Guitar Solo

I’m coming back home

I’m coming back home

I’m coming back home to you

I’ll be coming back home

I’ll be coming back home to you

I’ll be coming back home

Walk the Mountain ©

Lyrics & Music by Mikio

Sometimes I feel like I’m lost and astray

Don’t know what I’m doing, at night or in the day

I’ve tried the city life, the pressures and fears

There’s something missing and I know that it’s not here

Yet sometimes, I think I might find

That quiet gentleness a peace in my mind

I like the mountain air, the warm morning sun

Coolness of mountain dew, the feeling of one

The smell of dirt, the grass and the trees

The mountain scenery, grasshoppers and bees

Just have to find myself a way to get there

Mountain Living feel the life in the air

The Mountain’s calling me, I’m going back home

The Mountain’s calling me, no more will I roam

I walk the mountain, It’s where I feel free

I walk the mountain, that’s where I should be

Nothing like a moonlit mountain night

Sounds and smell, you just know that it’s right

The simple ways of people up there

The purity of hearts and the cleanness of air

I walk the mountain, my hands in the air

I walk the mountain, no worries no cares

I walk the mountain, my heart’s all aglow

I walk the mountain, I’m so much in love

Life is too short, no more waiting around

Answers to all questions are there to be found

I’m searching for the place a peace in my mind

That quiet place I know I will find

Love and stillness are all that you need

I walk the mountain it’s the best thing for me

Go on mountain walk you’ll know what I mean

All of life’s beauty it all can be seen

I walk the mountain all those things I have sought

Things I’ve been seeking the things I’ve been taught

Everything is there on your own morning walk

Beauty of life nature’s wisdom of thought

The Mountain’s calling me I’m going back home

The Mountain’s calling me no more will I roam

I walk the mountain It’s where I feel free

I walk the mountain the only place for me

Mikio — Guitar Solo

I like the mountain air, the warm morning sun

Coolness of the mountain dew, the feeling of one

The smell of dirt, the grass and the trees

The mountain scenery, grasshoppers and bees

Just have to find myself a way to get there

Mountain living, feel the life in the air

I walk the mountain I’ve fallen in love

I walk the mountain I’m so much in love

I walk the mountain I’ve fallen in love

I walk the mountain I’m so much in love

This mountain walk will take me back home

Deep in my heart I know I must walk alone

Sometimes I wish that I could walk it with you

This mountain walk was not meant for two

I walk the mountain, my hands in the air

I walk the mountain no worries no cares

I walk the mountain I’ve fallen in love

I walk the mountain, I’m so much in love

I walk the mountain, I’m already home

I walk the mountain, no more will I roam

The mountain’s open and the path is clear

The place I’m searching for I’ve found it right here

I walk the mountain, my hands in the air

I walk the mountain, no worries no cares
